Battleship Potemkin - live soundtrack by Matt Calvert + Jan Bang

Kings Place, London

Battleship Potemkin Live Score

Jan Bang and Matt Calvert

Presented by EFG London Jazz Festival

The masterpiece of early cinema, Eisenstein’s 1925 Soviet classic, Battleship Potemkin finds its new sound with Opera North’s 2017 commission to mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution and also to honour the wish of Eisenstein who hoped the score to be rewritten every 20 years to retain its relevance for each new generation. The film will be screened with Norwegian electronic musician and producer Jan Bang (Punkt) and Matt Calvert (Three Trapped Tigers) performing the score live with guitars, electronics and found sounds which are utterly fitting to the scenery, intensifying Eisenstein’s phenomenal imagery.

Dark Star Safari

Review in German Westzeit Magazine´s May edition.

English translation:

"Yes, the drummer is Swiss, but basically this dark star journey is another proof of the greatness of the Norwegian impro- + jazz- ?, no matter: music scene! Jan Bang, Erik Honoré, Eivind Aarset, Samuel Rohrer - these are all sonorous names, but what hatched here in the fabulous Berlin Candy Bomber Studio, is more than the sum of the individual gifts. And fortunately, during the first session, Jan Bang came up with the idea that the gently flowing improvisations could also be used to singing. Because the man can sing - his voice gives the ambient basic scaffolding several additional dimensions, it effortlessly consists of the hovering scraping of guitar sounds, harmonic synth pads and electro-disturbances as well as delicate percussion. Mordechai or November's Child are special highlights of this disc that stay in your ear for a long time. So is sustainable songwriting."

Dark Star Safari album reviewes

"powerful, song-based compositions." - Further.com

 Reviewed in Freq:

“The noticeable lyric from the tranquil “White Rose” is “music is harder in the future”, and I can’t help but ponder over that thought. This quartet feels as though it has taken it upon itself to take music entirely out of what we would recognise as the Western tradition, to strip it down to emotion and feeling, relying on their intuition as to what works best and pursuing that unfailingly. It is a thing of great vision and also great beauty. You would be wise to snap it up quick.” – Freq.org

"As a debut album, Dark Star Safari is a clear indication that this quartet has a promising future ahead of them, producing innovative and original music. The prospect of their second album is already mouth-watering". - John Eyles, Allaboutjazz
